Terms of Use

Last updated: July 28, 2026 · HalfLight: AI Dream Journal · Lantern Hours LLC

These Terms of Use (“Terms”) are a legal agreement between you and Lantern Hours LLC (“Lantern Hours,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) governing your use of the HalfLight mobile application, the HalfLight website, and related services (together, the “Service”).

By downloading, accessing, or using HalfLight, or by purchasing a HalfLight Pro subscription, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use HalfLight. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use HalfLight only with the consent of a parent or legal guardian who agrees to these Terms on your behalf. By using the Service, you represent that you meet these requirements.

2. Accounts

Some features, including cloud sync and AI features, require an account. When you create an account, you agree to:

  • Provide accurate information and keep it up to date
  • Keep your login credentials secure and confidential
  • Notify us promptly at support@thelanternhours.com if you suspect unauthorized use of your account

You are responsible for activity that occurs under your account. You can delete your account at any time from within the app, as described in our Privacy Policy.

3. License to Use HalfLight

Subject to these Terms, we grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use HalfLight on Apple-branded devices that you own or control, for your personal, non-commercial use, in accordance with Apple's App Store terms.

You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, rent, sublicense, reverse engineer, or attempt to extract the source code of the Service, except to the extent the law expressly permits it despite this restriction.

4. Subscriptions, Free Trials, and Purchases

4.1 HalfLight Pro

HalfLight's core journal, lucid-dreaming lessons, and progress features are free. HalfLight Pro is an optional auto-renewing subscription that unlocks paid features, including AI dream analysis, AI auto-tagging, and AI-generated titles. Current plans and prices are shown in the app and on our pricing page; the price shown in the App Store at the time of purchase is the price that applies.

4.2 Billing through Apple

All HalfLight Pro purchases are billed by Apple through your Apple ID, not by us. We never receive or store your payment card details. Payment is charged to your Apple ID account at confirmation of purchase.

4.3 Auto-renewal

Subscriptions renew automatically unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple ID account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the end of the current period, at the then-current price for your plan, until you cancel.

4.4 Free trials

Some plans may include a free trial (for example, one free week on the yearly plan). If you do not cancel before the trial ends, the subscription begins and your Apple ID account is charged for the first billing period. Any unused portion of a free trial is forfeited when you purchase a subscription. Free trials may be limited to new subscribers and are subject to Apple's eligibility rules.

4.5 Managing and canceling your subscription

You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time in your device's settings under your Apple ID subscriptions, or through the App Store. Deleting the app or your HalfLight account does not cancel your subscription — you must cancel through Apple. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep access to Pro features until then.

4.6 Refunds

Because Apple handles billing, refunds are handled by Apple under its App Store terms. You can request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. We cannot issue refunds directly for App Store purchases.

4.7 Price and feature changes

We may change subscription prices or the features included in a plan. If a price change affects an existing subscription, Apple will notify you and, where required, ask for your consent before the new price applies. If you do not agree to a price change, you can cancel before it takes effect.

4.8 Usage limits

AI features are subject to fair-use limits, such as daily AI request limits, which we may adjust to keep the Service reliable and sustainable. Pro unlocks the AI features; it does not guarantee unlimited AI requests.

5. AI Features and Wellness Disclaimer

When you use AI features, your selected dream content is processed by our backend and our AI service provider, as described in the Privacy Policy. AI outputs are generated automatically and may be inaccurate, incomplete, or unexpected.

HalfLight is not a medical or mental-health service. AI dream interpretations, lucid-dreaming lessons, and all other content in the Service are provided for reflection, education, and entertainment only. They are not medical, psychological, therapeutic, diagnostic, legal, or other professional advice, and you should not rely on them as such. If you have concerns about your sleep, dreams, or mental health, consult a qualified professional.

6. Your Content

You own the dream entries, profile information, and other content you create in HalfLight (“Your Content”). We do not claim ownership of Your Content.

You grant us a limited, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, transmit, process, and display Your Content solely as needed to operate the Service — for example, to save entries, sync them across your devices, and generate AI results you request. This license ends when Your Content is deleted from the Service, except for limited copies in backups, logs, or records retained as described in the Privacy Policy.

Dreams are private by default. If you choose to make a dream public, or to comment on another user's public dream, you grant us the additional right to display that content to other users, and you are responsible for what you choose to share. You represent that you have the rights to the content you submit and that it does not violate these Terms or any law. Content you make public may be reported by other users and removed by us under Section 8.

7. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any illegal purpose or in violation of these Terms
  • Post or share content that is unlawful, harassing, hateful, sexually exploitative of minors, or infringes anyone's rights
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service, other users' accounts, or our systems
  • Circumvent, probe, or abuse subscription entitlements, free trials, or AI usage limits
  • Use automated means to scrape, crawl, or bulk-extract data from the Service
  • Interfere with or disrupt the Service, including by transmitting malware or placing unreasonable load on our infrastructure
  • Impersonate any person or misrepresent your affiliation with anyone

We may remove content, restrict features, or suspend or terminate accounts that violate this section, as described in Section 8.

8. Community Content, Reporting, and Moderation

This section applies when you use HalfLight's shared spaces — the public feed, comments, and public profiles (together, the “Community Features”). Your private journal is not a Community Feature.

8.1 No tolerance for objectionable content or abusive users

There is no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive behavior in HalfLight's Community Features. Objectionable content includes content that is unlawful, harassing, threatening, hateful, defamatory, obscene, sexually explicit, sexually exploitative of minors, violent, or that promotes self-harm or discrimination, as well as spam and impersonation. Posting such content, or behaving abusively toward other users, may result in the immediate removal of your content and the loss of your access to the Community Features or to the Service entirely, without prior notice.

8.2 Reporting content and users

HalfLight includes an in-app reporting mechanism. You can report any dream post or comment in the shared feed from the item itself, and you can report a user from their profile. Reports are sent to us for review and may include the reported content, the reporting account, and the reason you select.

We review reports of objectionable content and abusive users, and we aim to act on them within 24 hours of receipt. Acting on a report may mean removing the reported content, banning the responsible user from the Community Features, terminating that user's account, or determining that no action is warranted. We do not report the outcome of every review back to the person who filed it.

You can also report content or a user by emailing support@thelanternhours.com if you cannot use the in-app reporting flow.

8.3 Blocking other users

You can block another user from their profile at any time, without involving us. When you block someone, their posts and comments are hidden from your view of the feed, they cannot interact with your content, and you are removed from each other's shared experience of the app. Blocking is a control you apply for yourself; you do not need to file a report first, and blocking someone is not the same as reporting them. You can unblock a user you have blocked from your settings.

8.4 Moderation actions we may take

When content or conduct violates these Terms, we may take any of the following actions, at our discretion and in proportion to the violation:

  • Remove content. We may remove or hide a dream post, comment, profile photo, bio, username, or other content from the Community Features.
  • Ban you from the Community Features. We may revoke your access to the public feed, commenting, and public profiles while leaving your account, your private dream journal, your progress, and your subscription intact. A ban of this kind means you can continue using HalfLight as a private dream journal, but you can no longer post to, comment in, or participate in the shared space. Bans may be temporary or indefinite.
  • Suspend or terminate your account. For serious or repeated violations, we may suspend or terminate your account entirely, as described in Section 12.

We keep a record of moderation actions, including the reason for the action and internal notes, as described in our Privacy Policy.

8.5 Questions about a moderation decision

If your content was removed or your access was restricted and you believe we made a mistake, you can contact us at support@thelanternhours.com. We will review the decision, but we are not obligated to restore content or access.

8.6 Misuse of reporting

Reporting is for genuine violations. Filing reports in bad faith — for example, to harass another user or to have content removed that does not violate these Terms — is itself a violation of these Terms and may result in a moderation action against your account.

9. Intellectual Property

The Service — including the app, website, design, text, graphics, logos, lesson content, and software — is owned by Lantern Hours LLC or its licensors and is protected by intellectual property laws. Except for the license granted to you in Section 3 and your rights in Your Content, no rights in the Service are transferred to you. “HalfLight” and the HalfLight logo may not be used without our prior written permission.

10. Third-Party Services

The Service relies on third-party providers, including Apple (App Store, Sign in with Apple, purchases, speech recognition), Supabase (authentication, database, cloud sync, server functions), and Anthropic (AI processing). Your use of those services through HalfLight may also be subject to their terms and policies. We are not responsible for third-party services we do not control.

11. Apple App Store Terms

These additional terms apply because HalfLight is distributed through Apple's App Store:

  • These Terms are between you and Lantern Hours LLC only, not with Apple. Apple is not responsible for the Service or its content.
  • Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app.
  • If the app fails to conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple may refund the purchase price of the app (if any). To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app.
  • Apple is not responsible for addressing any claims by you or a third party relating to the app, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to conform to legal or regulatory requirements, and claims under consumer protection or similar laws.
  • If a third party claims the app infringes their intellectual property rights, Lantern Hours LLC, not Apple, is responsible for the investigation, defense, settlement, and discharge of that claim to the extent required by these Terms.
  • You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. government embargo or designated a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not on any U.S. government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
  • Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.

12. Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time and may delete your account in the app. We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service, or any part of it, if you violate these Terms, if required by law, or if we discontinue the Service.

Not every enforcement action is a termination. As described in Section 8.4, we may restrict your access to a part of the Service — for example, banning you from the Community Features — while your account, your private dream journal, and your subscription remain active. Termination of your account is a separate and more serious action that ends your access to the Service as a whole.

If we terminate your account without cause while you have an active paid subscription, your remedy is to seek any refund available through Apple. Banning you from the Community Features or terminating your account for a violation of these Terms does not entitle you to a refund of any subscription fees, and does not cancel your subscription — you must cancel through Apple as described in Section 4.5.

Sections that by their nature should survive termination — including Sections 5, 6 (for retained copies), 9, and 13 through 18 — survive.

13. Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR SECURE, THAT DATA WILL NOT BE LOST, OR THAT AI OUTPUTS WILL BE ACCURATE OR RELIABLE. WE RECOMMEND YOU KEEP YOUR DEVICE BACKED UP.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so some of the above exclusions may not apply to you.

14. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, LANTERN HOURS LLC AND ITS OFFICERS, MEMBERS, EMPLOYEES, AND AGENTS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, GOODWILL, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM AROSE, OR (B) FIFTY U.S. DOLLARS ($50).

Some jurisdictions do not allow the limitation of certain damages, so some of the above limitations may not apply to you. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

15. Indemnification

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Lantern Hours LLC from claims, damages, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of Your Content, your use of the Service, or your violation of these Terms or any law.

16. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wisconsin, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Wisconsin, and you and we consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.

Nothing in this section prevents you from bringing a claim in small-claims court where you live if the claim qualifies, or limits any non-waivable consumer rights you have under the laws of your place of residence.

17. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice in the app or by another reasonable method. Changes take effect when posted unless stated otherwise, and your continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms. Changes to subscription pricing are handled as described in Section 4.7.

18. Miscellaneous

  • Entire agreement. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Service.
  • Severability. If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full effect.
  • No waiver. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of our right to enforce it later.
  • Assignment. You may not assign these Terms without our consent. We may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
  • Export compliance. You agree to comply with applicable export laws in connection with your use of the Service.
